Mirtiotissa Monastery
The Monastery of The Virgin Mary of iyrtiotissa was built about 400 years ago and takes its name from an icon that was found in a cave among the myrtles by a Father Daniel following a vision. Some time later the monastery was built on that spot.
It exists today having survived pirate raids, robberies, natural disasters and the deterioration of time. It monastery is located on Corfu's west coast, about fifteen kilometres from Corfu Town, between the villages of Pelekas and Vatos and situated amongst the greenery of the steep mountainside above Mirtiotissa Beach, surrounded by pines, olives and wild vegetation. There is a small shop selling herbs and small religious items.
